Sam & Sons Services has hired and trained tradespeople in Northern Virginia since 1999. The company runs five trades under one Virginia DPOR class A contractor license — plumbing, heating and cooling, electrical, handyman and remodeling — and hires licensed technicians, experienced carpenters and helpers who want to learn a trade properly. There is no online application system. Call the office on (703) 256-8080 during business hours, say which trade you work in and how long you have been doing it, and ask for the person who handles hiring.
Plumbing, HVAC, electrical and handyman jobs we hire for
Hiring is steady rather than seasonal, and it is spread across all five trades the company holds under one license:
- Plumbers and plumbing technicians — service work, fixtures, drains and sewers, water heaters, gas piping, valve and pressure work, water service lines. See plumbing for the range.
- HVAC technicians — furnaces, air conditioning, heat pumps, boilers, ductwork and controls. See heating and cooling.
- Electricians — panels, circuits, device and lighting work, EV chargers. See electrical.
- Carpenters and multi-trade repair technicians — doors and windows, rotted wood and trim, drywall, siding, decks, tile and flooring. See handyman and home repair.
- Remodeling carpenters and leads — bathrooms, kitchens, basements and additions, including permitted work. See remodeling.
- Helpers and apprentices — no license required to start, but a genuine intention to learn the trade is.
What we look for in a licensed tradesperson
Trade skill is necessary and it is not sufficient. The people who last here have these in common:
- They diagnose before they replace. The company’s reputation rests on telling a customer when a unit is repairable, not on selling a new one.
- They work to code because it is the code, not because an inspector might show up. Permitted work here is pulled and processed in house, and the final portion of payment is held until the inspection passes — a failed inspection is the company’s problem, not a piece of paperwork.
- They finish the invisible parts. Dielectric separation at a connection, re-bonding copper after it is cut, threshold flashing under a new door, stain-blocking framing before new board goes up. Nobody photographs any of it and all of it decides whether the repair holds.
- They leave the property clean. Dust barriers, floor and furniture protection, debris removal. This is written into the work, not done as a favor.
- They explain things to homeowners without talking down to them. A large share of this work happens in occupied houses with the owner standing there.
- A valid driver’s license and the right to work in the United States. Trade licensure and certifications are an advantage in every trade and a requirement in some roles.
How the work actually runs
Worth knowing before you call, because it is different from a lot of shops:
- Estimating is separated from the tools. An estimator prices the job at the property and puts it in writing before work starts. Technicians are not sent out to sell against a phone quote somebody else guessed at.
- No prices are quoted by telephone and none are published. If you are used to reading off a flat-rate book, this is a different job.
- Five trades in one company means fewer dead ends. When a water heater replacement turns into a gas correction, or a bathroom turns up knob-and-tube, the licensed person who can deal with it works here.
- Permits, code and inspections are part of normal work, to the Virginia building code, or to District of Columbia code on the DC side of the service area.
- Work spans everything from a service call to an addition, in single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums, apartment buildings and commercial spaces.
The office is open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:00am to 12:00pm, and the emergency line is answered 24 hours a day. Ask on the call how after-hours work is handled in the role you are interested in.
How to apply for a job with Sam & Sons
There is no portal, no tracking number and no automated rejection three weeks later. Call (703) 256-8080 during office hours and ask for the person who handles hiring.
Have this ready before you dial:
- Which trade you work in, and how many years.
- Any trade licenses, journeyman or master cards, EPA or manufacturer certifications you hold, and the state they are held in.
- The kind of work you have mostly done — service calls, new installation, remodeling, commercial.
- Whether you drive, and which part of the service area you are coming from.
- When you could start.
If the line is busy, use the form on contact and note that you are calling about careers rather than a repair, and the office will get back to you.
