How to contact Sam & Sons Services

Telephone
(703) 256-8080. This is the number for new work, scheduling, and after-hours emergencies alike. During office hours a person answers it; outside them, the answering service reaches the on-call technician.
Office
5649-C General Washington Drive, Alexandria, Virginia 22312. Estimates happen at your property rather than here, so there is no need to come in.
Office hours
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Saturday, 9:00am to 12:00pm. Sunday closed.
Emergency
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No heat in January, no water, an active leak, a dead panel — these do not wait for Monday.
Online
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn are all listed in the footer. Messages there reach us, but the telephone is faster.

What to have ready when you call

A two-minute call with the right four facts is worth far more than a long one without them. Before you dial, have these ready:

  1. What is actually failing, in plain words. Not a diagnosis — a symptom. No hot water. Water on the basement floor. The upstairs is cold and the downstairs is not. Breaker trips when the dryer runs. Door will not latch.
  2. Gas or electric. For a water heater, furnace, range or dryer this changes the trade, the technician and sometimes the permit. If you are unsure, look for a vent pipe or a gas shut-off near the unit.
  3. How old it is, roughly. The model and serial number from the data plate is even better. Age is often the difference between a repair conversation and a replacement conversation — and sometimes it means the unit is still inside its manufacturer warranty.
  4. Where in the property it sits. Basement, crawl space, attic, closet, alcove, second-floor utility room, roof. Access dictates what has to be on the truck, and a tight alcove can dictate the equipment before anything else is decided.
  5. Anything unusual about the property. A condominium with building management and a shared riser, a tenant space that has to stay open, a well rather than public water, an address with restricted parking.

If it is an emergency, shut off the water or the power to the affected item first, then call. On a leaking water heater, close the cold supply valve on top of the tank and kill the gas control or the breaker — the steps are on emergency plumber.

What happens after you request an estimate

  1. The office takes the details and matches the work to the right trade and the right technician.
  2. You get an appointment — same business day during business hours where the schedule allows, next business day after hours.
  3. An estimator or technician comes to the property and looks at the actual installation.
  4. You receive a written price for the work before anything begins. We do not price jobs by telephone, and we do not publish prices, because the job in front of the estimator is the only one worth quoting.
  5. If you go ahead, the work is scheduled, performed to the Virginia building code, and — where a permit applies — closed out at inspection before the last payment is released.

There is no charge to have the estimator come out and put a number in writing. More on how the company runs is on about Sam & Sons Services.

The Northern Virginia and Washington DC areas we cover

The company works across Northern Virginia — Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, Springfield, Vienna, McLean, Reston, Herndon, Manassas, Woodbridge, Sterling and the rest of the twenty-four communities listed on the service areas page — plus Washington DC for handyman, electrical and remodeling work.

Plumbing and HVAC are not offered in Washington DC. Everywhere in the Virginia service area, all five trades are available from the same licensed company: plumbing, heating and cooling, electrical, handyman work and remodeling.

Frequently asked questions

Do you answer the phone after hours?

Yes. The emergency line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Outside office hours an answering service takes the call and reaches the on-call technician. Use it for what it is for: active leaks, no heat, no water, sewage backing up, a dead electrical panel, anything that is getting worse while you wait. Routine scheduling and estimates are better handled during office hours, when the full office is there to book them.

Will someone give me a price on the phone?

No, and that is deliberate. Two jobs that sound identical on the telephone routinely are not, once someone sees the access, the venting, the condition of the surrounding work and whatever the last installer skipped. An estimator comes to the property, looks at the actual work, and gives you the price in writing before anything starts. A number quoted sight-unseen is either padded to cover the unknowns or it is going to change.

How quickly can someone come out?

Every call is scheduled as soon as the calendar allows; a same-day visit is possible when the schedule permits, and the next business day is typical for calls taken after hours. Genuine emergencies are dispatched around the clock, and after-hours dispatch carries an additional emergency fee that is stated before anyone is sent out. Larger scheduled work — a remodel, a panel upgrade, an equipment replacement that needs a permit — is booked to a date once the written price is agreed, since those jobs need materials ordered and inspections coordinated.

What information do you need to book an appointment?

The property address, a number to reach you on, and enough about the problem to send the right trade: what is failing, whether the appliance is gas or electric, roughly how old it is, and where in the property it sits. Model and serial numbers help. If the property is a condominium or a tenant space, say so on the call so the water shut-off or building access can be arranged in advance rather than on the day.
